Lambert and His Influence on British Ballet(1)
Ballet in the end of 1800s was often put on the stage in The Alhambra Theatre Music Hall and The Queens Hall, which were at that time places of fame and celebrity in London. Worldly reputed ballerina Pavlova gave her performances in London frequently and Diagilev's Ballets Russes made their visits here annually. Both of them have laid down profound impact on British Ballet. Besides, in the 1930s, Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and Royal Danish Ballet paid visits to London with great frequency. In the year 1956, Covent Garden Theater presented performance by The Bolshoi Ballet, during which ballerina Ulanova made a sensation throughout British Isles.
The Carmago Academy deeply influenced the British ballet style. The Academy was established by the chief editor Philip Harrison and the critic Arnold Haskell of the magazine "Dancing Times" in 1930 and hosted the ballet "Ponona". The Academy greatly improved Britain's ballet skills through the teaching of many schools, personal ballet teachers and with the help of such organizations like Cecchetti Academy -holder of the test for the dance teacher certificate.
Espinosa, a dancer, opened the first ballet school in London before 1900.He also played an active part in the establishment of the Association of Opera and Dancing, which was founded in 1920 and out of which Royal College of Dancing later grew. In 1922, Lambert and several others initiated to establish "The Cecchetti Academy", which in 1925 was merged with the Imperial Institute of Dance Teachers, founded in 1904. Pavlova founded his own dancing school, and Ricart dancing school, Lambert dancing school and Karl dancing school came into being.
As following are periodicals published in Great Britain, which are on professional dance: Dance Era (monthly magazine routinely started since 1910), Dance and Dancers (established since 1950), Ballet Yearbook (1946-1964), Ballet (1939-1952) and so on.
During the British ballet history after 1900s, it is beyond any doubt to mention two persons who are precursors and founders of this splendid era. One is Mrs. Mary Lambert, founder of Lambert Dance School and Lambert Ballet. The other one is Mrs. Ninetjer, founder of Dance Arts Academy of London and Royal Ballet.
